diy coffee filter

hi there,

so this d-i-y came about kinda as an accident.  i ran out of my paper filters and really, really, really, needed to figure out how to have some coffee quickly.  so there i was thinking and craving my blue bottle bella donovan blend

photo taken from seriouseats.com

http://store.bluebottlecoffee.net/Detail.bok?no=1 that was sitting in the coffee canister just waiting and calling my name.  i remembered that i had some organic muslin fabric leftover from another project so off i went, and along this came ...

i made a couple and gave them to my friends too.  i kept mine pretty simple and didn't use ribbon to top them off but decided to try it for some of the ones i gave my friends.  they wont' look too pretty once you've washed them and used them over and over but honestly they're soooooooo useful and come in very handy!  this may not be for some people that would rather have the convenience of throwing a paper filter away daily but eversince i started using my muslin fabric filter, i haven't gone back to paper!  it's a small part that i'm doing to eliminate a bit of waste in the house and i never have to buy paper filters again!  they're not totally expensive but hey (one less thing to worry about refilling)!

materials needed:
  1. recommended - muslin organic fabric
  2. ribbon
  3. sewing machine
  4. thread
  5. scissors
  6. paper filter that you use for your machine for pattern
  7. 30-40 minutes or less

directions:

take a paper filter that you use for your machine and use that as a pattern.  cut the fabric to size leaving about 1.5 inches on all sides for seam allowance

then just sew along all sides

then sew it again a second time all around.  then take a ribbon and sew one part on one side and then on to the other side (this just makes the filter easier to handle)

that's it!!! all done and there you have it.

thanks for stopping by.  i hope you enjoyed this tutorial!

  1. Best.Idea.Ever! I hadn't even thought about it since hubby is the only coffee drinker in the house, but now I'm facepalming because I didn't think of it first.

  2. @Elina,
I'm glad you like the idea. I couldn't find anything online about a DIY Filter so I figured I could try it. I know some people in my family have said, why not just buy the paper ones and then toss them when you're done? I said, nah. This way, I never have to think about purchasing any! Plus, my coffee taste great! Thanks for reading Elina!
